就是这张图，一个垂死的神话女子。初中的时候，在岚的某一期《作文通讯》的封底上看到，一下子就被吸引了。不知道画家，不知道画中的故事，只是觉得那个女人悲凉而绝然的姿势如此吸引人。

后来我过生日的时候，岚把那张封底撕下来送给了我

很多年后，在一个美术杂志上，又看见了这幅画，作者是John William Waterhouse，被认为是拉斐尔前派的一员。但实际上他风格偏古典，与罗塞蒂那些人有所不同。

同时知道了，这幅画的题材，来源于丁尼生的诗The Lady of Shalott

原诗应该是这样的。

On either side of the river lie
　　Long fields of barley and of rye
　　That clothe the world and meet the sky
　　And through the field the road run by
　　To many-towered Camelot
　　And up and down the people go
　　Gazing where the lilies blow
　　'Round an island there below
　　The island of Shalott

故事的背景是亚瑟王时代。
The Lady of Shalott是一个女巫，主在Camelot上游的一座孤岛上。她自出生就身负禁咒。父亲把她关在Shalott城堡，坐在织布机前，终生不允许离开。她只能从面前的一面镜子里面，观看这个世界的映像，并且将大千世界编织到挂毯上。
有一天，著名的骑士Lancelot从她的窗下走过，她从镜子里面看见了他，并且不顾一切的扑到窗前。这时候镜子忽然碎裂了，挂毯也飞走了。她知道魔法没有宽恕她的背叛。
于是她用生命最后的时间，离开了城堡解缆而下，唱着歌向Lancelot所在的Camelot漂流而去。
当小船漂到Camelot时，已是舟在人亡。Lancelot看见了她的尸体，说She has a lovely face，God in His mercy lend her grace，The Lady of Shalott。

Waterhouse 应该是非常喜欢这个故事，他为她不止画了一幅画。
表现The Lady of Shalott在镜子前面转身的那一瞬间。

然而这的确是Waterhouse的佳作。

就是画面背景上的野花，风之花，据说就是秋牡丹或者叫做波斯菊的。

最后最后，回到The Lady of Shalott 的话题上
之所以又想起了这个，因为前几天听Loreena McKennitt的音乐，1991年的the visit专辑，里面就有一首长达11分钟的The Lady of Shalott。McKennitt把丁尼生的原诗谱了很朴素的曲，用她那种纤细而不失力度的声音唱出来，很美妙。
The Lady of Shalott这个故事其实非常简单。跟随着亚瑟王的传说流传久远，有人唱歌，有人画画，是因为故事中有一些令人不能释怀的东西吧。

我是说构图，有一点点像，包括那个窗户。

感觉当然差得远了。看上去，waterhouse是以古典主义为本，混合了一些印象派的技巧。
